Blogopus is a unique creature. The name also reflects effort. Divide it in two and you have “blog” and “opus,” which means “work.” Whenever you visit blogopus, I hope you find the words and images useful and pleasing.

Why the octopus theme? This mysterious creature once terrified me. While researching the octopus for a children’s poem I was writing, I learned how complex and fascinating this amazing cephalopod truly is. The octopus symbolizes, for me, the power of words to delight, enlighten, and transform.
And like most poets and writers, I need eight arms, three hearts, and words to get through the day. But rather than tax with length, I aspire to divert with variety. I’ll share writing and images daily—but just enough to last your favorite morning cup. Hopefully, they’ll engage and inspire you.
To your right is a photo of Patches, my first book-loving mascot. A cute, purple amigurumi octopus, she wears an eye patch—borrowed from a pirate, of course. She guards blogopus, courtesy of my ideal reader, a wonderful, creative ten-year-old brimming with inquisitive intelligence and imagination. (And if you’ve left age ten behind, venture another look within.)
Blogopus will be populated by “Best Words Ever,” “Happy Birthday, Poet!” and other pithy daily features. Guest bloggers such as Robby (short for Rabelais) Octopus, who will talk about children’s literature, will occasionally visit. And over the coming months you’ll begin encountering photos and octopictures—some by illustrators whose work you may know and love.
The ocean of words is wide and deep. Who knows where these waves and swirling phrases will lead us?
